The five second rule. Mel Robbins has an extremely popular ted talk and book on what she calls the 5 second rule. Although extremely simple this concept truly has the power to change your life. Here is how she describes the rule. If you have an impulse to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill the idea. Our lives are defined by the gap between what happens to us and our reaction to it. The 5 second rule closes the gap between what needs to be done and actually doing it.

One of my biggest fears is waking up a year from now in the same place I am today. In large part the last two years of my life have felt like running on a treadmill. I turn up the intensity but haven’t made it very far. All the knowledge in the world won’t get you very far if you don’t take action on it. The five second rule coined by Mel Robbins is a great way to initiate the change process. I found myself using this trick to take my cold showers before I even knew what the rule was. It was just easier to count myself down and then rip the handle on the ice cold water. What is awesome is this doesn’t just work for cold showers It can help you take action and move towards just about any result you want to create in your life. So long as you have a clear vision for what you want to create for yourself then this trick will serve you will. This week try asking pairing the 5 second rule with the question “Now what needs to be done?” If you aren’t at a place where you can take action then do something to commit your future self to action. Set a reminder, buy a course, let a friend know what you intend to do, anything that creates an obligation for your future self to follow through. The truth is you know what to do, you know why you need to do it, you just need to take action. Count yourself down and blast off to the next level of your life. Take the leap!
